The Korcak-exponent: A non-fractal descriptor for landscape patchiness

چکیده
In this short paper we introduce a proper method to perform Korcak-analysis and obtain the correct Korcak-exponent on a set of patches, embedded into two-dimensions. Both artificial and natural data sets are used for the demonstration. The independence of the Korcak-exponent from the classical (Hausdorff) fractal dimension is also demonstrated. 2012 Elsevier B.V. Fractal measures of spatial pattern as a heuristic for return rate in vegetative systems
Measurement of population persistence is a long-standing problem in ecology; in particular, whether it is possible to gain insights into persistence without long time-series. Fractal measurements of spatial patterns, such as the Korcak exponent or boundary dimension, have been proposed as indicators of the persistence of underlying dynamics. Here we explore under what conditions a predictive re...
متن کاملPatchiness and Co-Existence of Indigenous and Invasive Mussels at Small Spatial Scales: The Interaction of Facilitation and Competition
Ecological theory predicts that two species with similar requirements will fail to show long-term co-existence in situations where shared resources are limiting, especially at spatial scales that are small relative to the size of the organisms. Two species of intertidal mussels, the indigenous Perna perna and the invasive Mytilus galloprovincialis, form mixed beds on the south coast of South Af...

The sensitivity of landscape metrics to the scale effect is one of the most challenging issues in landscape ecology and quantification of land use spatial patterns. In this study, fractal dimension was employed to assess the effect of scale on the sensitivity of landscape metric in the north of Iran (around Sari) as the case study. Land use/ cover maps were derived from Landsat-8 (OLI sensor) i...
متن کاملCross-modality Analysis Using Hurst Analysis
Methods of assessing the fractal characteristics of time-varying signals like the heart rate, Electroencephalogram, respiratory rate, seismology signal, and so on, which vary apparently irregularly, are random. Hurst (1951) defined an empirical descriptor, the Hurst exponent, of temporal signals describing natural phenomena. This was based on the statistical assessment of the observation of man...
متن کاملCluster size distributions: signatures of self-organization in spatial ecologies.
Three different lattice-based models for antagonistic ecological interactions, both nonlinear and stochastic, exhibit similar power-law scalings in the geometry of clusters. Specifically, cluster size distributions and perimeter-area curves follow power-law scalings. In the coexistence regime, these patterns are robust: their exponents, and therefore the associated Korcak exponent characterizin...
